According to the Population Census in the year 2011, Ahmedabad District had a population of 7,214,225. Out of which the male and female were 3,788,051 and 3,426,174 respectively. The population of Ahmedabad District constituted 11.94 percent of total population of Ahmedabad.

Ahmedabad district is the centre of Gujarati cultural activities and diverse traditions of different ethnic and religious communities. Popular celebrations and observances include Uttarayan - Kite festival and Navaratri with people performing Garba - folk dance of the state of Gujarat. Parts of Ahmedabad are known for their specialty of folk art such as embroidery work, Moiri foot wear, mirror and high quality idols of Lord Ganesha.

Ahmedabad district has the highest literacy rate of 79.5 percent in Gujarat. There are ten management colleges with; 9 MCA colleges, 45 ITIs offering industrial training programmes and 7 polytechnic colleges. There are seventy four colleges including engineering, medical, arts, and science and law colleges.

Ahmedabad district is an industrial base for sectors such as textiles, drugs, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and agro and food processing industries. The most important sectors of investment and employment in the district, since 1980, are the Textile and Chemicals industries. More than 14% of the overall investments in all stock exchanges in the country and 60% of the total industrial productivity are contributed by the district. A number of business conglomerates such as Adani Group, Reliance Industries, Nirma Group of Industries, Arvind Mills, Cadilla Pharmaceuticals, Shell, Ltd., Claris Life Sciences, Stork, Rollepaal (Netherland) etc. are present in the district. The district has over 23,734 small scale industries which generates more than 95,591 jobs with total investment of INR 89,356.5 lakhs. Engineering, chemical, textiles, and paper products are the chief small scale industry sectors present in the district.

Agriculture also plays a key role in the economy of the district. Major crops being produced in the district are cucurbits, citrus, cabbage, cumin, and cotton. In 2006-07, Ahmedabad had the highest production of cucurbits in the district amounting to 31,996 Metric Tonnes. Overall production of cotton in Ahmedabad district is also impressive.

Tourism in Ahmedabad District
There are several places of tourist interest in Ahmedabad district. The district is home to one of the famous World Heritage Site, the Adalaj Vav (Stepwell). The Calico museum in Ahmedabad is one of the best textile museums in the world. Science City, located off Sarkhej- Gandhinagar Highway promotes science education through hands on learning in the Hall of Science and also has an Energy Park that promotes improved energy sources. The lake in Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary in the district is a freshwater body, having rich biodiversity of wide variety of fishes, various vegetation, algae, and medicinal plants and over 250,000 birds.

How to reach Ahmedabad District
By Road: National Highway 8 passes through the district connecting it to major industrial centers, which includes Gandhinagar (28 km), Vadodara, Bharuch (182 km), Surat (278 km), Anand (73 km), Navsari (301 km) and Mumbai ( 516 km). Ahmedabad district is also connected to Rajkot (225 km), Ankleshwar (195 km), Jamnagar (313 km), Vapi (345 km) and Mehsana (74 km).

By Rail: A broad gauge rail line of 111 km is present in the district. Total length of meter gauge rail line is 245 km. In total, there are sixty railway stations in Ahmedabad district. Ahmedabad is directly connected by rail to several cities of India which includes Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Trivandrum and Varanasi.

By Air: The airport of Ahmedabad district is well connected to domestic destinations such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, Coimbatore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Kolkata. The airport is also connected with USA, Europe, and Middle East cities such as Muscat, Singapore, Sharjah, Kuwait, and KualaLampur.
