The Aathupalayam Dam is one of the important dams inTamil Nadu. The dam is located in the Karvazhi village of K. Paramathi taluk in Karur District. The construction work of the dam began in the year 1980. The dry area could not receive water supplies as the Aathupalayam reservoir was used for storing the polluted water of Orathuppalayam flowing down the Noyyal River for several years. The storage tank was used for harnessing the surplus water that flows down the Noyyal River as well as drains Noyyal River. This water was the used for irrigating a huge area spread over almost 19,000 acres in Karur district. The excess water is mostly available during the months of September and December.
History of Aathupalayam Dam
The construction work began in the year 1980. It was completed after almost 10 years due to certain problems. Some of the obstacles evolved due to technical and financial delays. However, by 1995 the reservoir became a storehouse that carried polluted water and sludge that was carried by Noyyal River. These mostly came from the dyeing and bleaching factories located in the Tirupur and Coimbatore regions.
Several petitions had been placed to the State government for cleaning the dam and to bring it for proper use. A plan was thus, implemented to obstruct the polluted waters of Noyyal River from flowing into the reservoir. A check dam had also been constructed to divert the LBP canal water to drain into the reservoir. Presently the Aathupalayam Dam is used for irrigation purpose.
