Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary

Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, in Andhra Pradesh, is famous for hosting a number of Indian Leopards, along with a great diversity of flora and fauna.

Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, Visakhapatnam District, Andhra PradeshKambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is situated near Visakhapatnam city of Visakhapatnam district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It was previously under the control of Maharajah of Vizianagaram. However later, since 10th March 1970, it came under the management of Andhra Pradesh Forest Department. The wildlife sanctuary derives its name from the local hillock Kambalakonda. Indian Leopard is regarded as the indicator species of Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary.

Geography of Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary
Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area located in the northern side of Visakhapatnam and Pendurthi, towards the west of National Highway 5. The region mainly comprises dry evergreen forest mixed with meadows and scrubs and spans over an area of 70.70 square kilometres. It constitutes a hilly terrain having steep slopes.

Flora and Fauna of Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary
Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is the home to a vast variety of flora and fauna. Several species of flora found in the sanctuary are the representatives of Eastern Ghats. Some of the prominent species of flora found here include Abrus precatorius, Grewia tiliaefolia, Catunaregam spinosa, Tectona grandis and others. Common fauna of the sanctuary enlist Indian Jackal, Chital, Indian Pangolin, Indian Muntjac, Indian Leopard, Partridges, Quails, Treepie, Asian Paradise-flycatcher, Chameleon, Indian Cobra and many more.
