Guhagraja Ganesha is one of the popular forms of Lord Ganesha. The Lord is known as Guhagraja because he was born as the elder brother to Lord Kartikeya (Skanda), the God of War. Several Puranas like Brahmavaivarta Purana (Ganapati Khanda) and Mudgala Purana depict Ganesha as Guhagraja, which means the one who is born before Guha. Lord Kartikeya or Skanda is also known as Guha.
The ancient legends mention that once Lord Shiva, the father of Ganesha and Kartikeya, announced that the first one who goes around the world will be declared as the elder brother. Kartikeya mounted on his divine peacock and went around the world. But Ganesha revolved around Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He explained that his parents represent the entire world and demanded the reward. Lord Ganesha was declared as the elder brother.
