The Princely State of Jetpur was one of the well known princely states of India that was administered by a native prince under the guidance of the British authorities. The princely state was under the indirect control of the British Empire in India. Jetpur State covered a total area of 283 sq km and comprised of a total population of 3,540 in the year 1921. The Vala dynasty of the Virani branch was the ruling family of the erstwhile princely state. It was one of the princely states included in the Kathiawar states that were incorporated as a part of the Kathiawar Agency. It was under the suzerainty of the Bombay Presidency. The native rulers, identified as Indian Princes by the British administration, accepted the suzerainty of the British Government in order to receive protection and security from the British administration against outside hostile forces. The native rulers managed the internal administration the princely state under the indirect control of the British authorities.
The Princely State of Jetpur was considered as one of the Sixth Class State. The succession of the throne of Jetpur state was governed by the rule of equal division. As a result, the princely state included various smaller estates. The princely state of Jetpur included 28 Talukdars in the year 1921 and around 25 Talukdars in the year 1940. the native ruler of the state held the title of Vala.
After the independence of India in the year 1947, the princely state of Jetpur was acceded to the newly formed Union of India, also known as Dominion of India, alsong with the other native states of the Kathiawar Agency. Almost all of the states were merged to form the Bombay state, which was later divided to created the modern Indian states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
