Yaingangpokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary

Yaingangpokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary, in Manipur, is a protected area inhabited by a vast variety of flora and fauna.

Yaingangpokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary, Chandel District, ManipurYaingangpokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Chandel district of the Indian state Manipur, on the Indo-Myanmar border. It spans over an area of 184.4 square kilometres. The protected area experiences 35 percent humidity during dry season whereas 100 percent during rainy season. It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary on 21st March 1989. It mainly comprises tropical moist deciduous and teak Gurjan forests. Eco system of the forest is an amalgam of riverian and terrestrial eco-systems.

Flora of Yaingangpokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary
Yaingangpokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary is the abode of a diverse variety of flora. Dominant species of the forest includes Bauhinea spp., Quercus spp., Cedrella serrata, Cedrella toona, Emblica officinalis, Terminalia chebula, Melanorrhoea usitata, Tectona grandis, Dipterocarpus tuberculatus and Dipterocarpus turbinatus. Along the bank of the rivers, Bamboo trees grow in abundance.

Fauna of Yaingangpokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary
Yaingangpokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary shelters about 42 species of mammals, 6 species of amphibian, 29 species of reptiles, 74 species of aves and 86 species of fishes. Common reptiles which can be spotted here include Land Monitor Lizard, Python, Cobra, Krait, Viper, Tortoise etc. Mammals found in the sanctuary enlist Leopard, Pangolin, Common Otter, Indian Civet Cat, Serow, Stump Tail Macaque, Slow Loris, Malayan Sun Bear, Himalayan Black Bear, Wild Bear, Hoolock Gibbon and many more.

Visiting Information
Yaingangpokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary can be easily reached from Imphal through roadways. Various guest houses provide comfortable accommodation to the visitors.
