The state of Manipur is located in the north-eastern part of India. Its geographical terrain is characterized by misty hills, valleys, cascading rapids, tripling rivers and forests, which have beautified this Jewel of India. These, along with varieties of flowers, exotic blooms, art forms, dances, indigenous games, martial arts, handloom clothes and exquisite handicrafts have the potential to draw tourists to this state. Manipur also has wildlife sanctuaries namely, Yangoupokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary and Khongjaingamba Ching Wildlife Sanctuary. These wildlife sanctuaries are described below.
Yangoupokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary
Yangoupokpi Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Chandel District along the Indo-Myanmar international boundary line crossing boundary pillars No. 16 to 22. On 3rd of April, 1946, this sanctuary was declared a reserve forest by the State Darbar of Manipur and approved by His Highness in April, 1946. It was re-declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary on the 21st of March, 1989. Yangoupokpi Lokchao is spread over an area of about 190 square kilometers. The entire sanctuary has been categorized into five zones, namely, Khudengthabi, Leibi, Laiching, Kwatha and Yangoupokpi. The geographical terrain of the sanctuary is characterized by steep slopes, flat and undulating hilly terrains, which are drained by a number of hill streams and gullies. This sanctuary is a member of the terrestrial eco-regions of the Mizoram-Manipur-Kachin Rain Forests. Seven forest villages are also located inside the sanctuary. Some of the other occupants of the sanctuary are mammalian (like stump-tailed macaque, pig-tailed macaque, red panda, and clouded leopard), fish fauna (like cyprinid fish and mahseer) and reptiles (like pythons and Manipur green snake). This sanctuary is one of the nine Important Bird Areas (IBA) of Manipur. Some of the birds which have been noted here are blyth"s tragopan, Indian myna and spotted dove.
Khongjaingamba Ching Wildlife Sanctuary
Khongjaingamba Ching Wildlife Sanctuary is known to be established in the year 2016. This wildlife sanctuary is spread over a total area of about 0.412 square kilometers.
