Introduction

The War Museum at the Kumaon Regimental Centre in Ranikhet, is a well-maintained museum that commemorates the glory, achievements, and triumphs of the Kumaon Regiment. It has been established in 1978 to preserve and showcase the rich military legacy, traditions, and customs of the Kumaon region. Located in Ranikhet, visitors can typically spend around three hours exploring the exhibits. The museum remains open from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

Collections at the War Museum

The War Museum displays various types of army materials including War Trophies, flags, uniforms, manuscripts, paintings, rifles, important historical documents, and military weapons. The museum also features a collection of photographs documenting various wars and military campaigns in which the Kumaon Regiment participated. These exhibits offer visitors an insight into the regiment’s distinguished history, valour, and contribution to the nation. 

Personal Belongings of Soldiers: The museum serves as an engaging destination for military enthusiasts, showcasing a remarkable collection of weapons used by the armed forces and their adversaries, along with medals and uniforms belonging to distinguished soldiers. he collection also features Japanese and Chinese rifles captured during the 1962 war, making the museum a valuable repository of India's military history. 

Flags and Plaques: Its exhibits also include flags captured from rebels during various battles and stone tablets providing information about significant wars and military events. 

Photographs: The museum highlights the stories associated with the first and second recipients of the Param Vir Chakra from the Kumaon Regiment, offering visitors an insight into their exceptional bravery and service. Visitors can also see photographs related to the Kargil War, the high-altitude armed conflict fought between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999 in the Kargil district of Ladakh along the Line of Control. 

Important artefacts: Among its notable artefacts are the silver scepters of the Rani of Jhansi, crucial military documents related to different battles and wireless field telephones used during military operations.

Other Attractions at the War Museum

The museum also features a dedicated section showcasing the life and achievements of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, widely known by his nickname “Sam Bahadur,” was a distinguished Indian Army general officer. He served as the Chief of the Army Staff during the India–Pakistan War of 1971 and played a significant role in India's military history. He was also the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal. 

In addition, visitors can explore a garden displaying captured enemy equipment, adding to the museum’s unique collection of military artefacts and historical exhibits. The KRC golf course is another major attraction for visitors of this museum.

The War Museum is located within the Kumaon Regimental Centre in the picturesque hill town of Ranikhet, situated in Almora district, Uttarakhand. The museum is accessible via Kathgodam, which serves as the nearest railway station, while Pantnagar Airport is the nearest airport.
