Vijayamangai Temple is the Shivastalam associated with Arjuna`s penance. It is considered the 47th in the series of Tevara Stalams located north of the river Kaveri. This temple is located at Govindaputtur near Kumbhakonam.
Legends: The name Govindaputtur surrounds a cow `s worshipping Shiva (found carved on the stone pillars near the entrance). Arjuna (Vijayan) obtained the Pasupatastram after severe penances to Shiva here, hence the name Vijayamangai. Nandi worshipped Shiva here.
Temple: There are two prakarams here. The Amman temple is in the outer Prakaram. Pralayamkaatta Vinayakar adorns the inner prakaram. There are several inscriptions from the Chola period. There is another Vijayamangai on the southern banks of Kollidam river. There are murals of Natarajar, Dakshinamurthy, Brahma Vishnu, Vinayakar, Subramaniyar, Shiva and Parvati and the Tevara Moovar and Manikkavacakar in the Mahamandapam.
Festivals: The annual Brahmotsavam falls in the month of Chittirai where the festival deities are taken out in procession vahanams. Other festivals celebrated here are Margazhi Tiruvadirai, Navaratri, Kartikai Deepam and Aadi Pooram.
