Vedapuriswarar Temple, also referred to as the `Vazhaimadunathar Temple` is an ancient Hindu temple of Lord Shiva and has been spoken about in the hymns of Appar and Campantar, being categorised as `Paadal Petra Sthalam`. It is situated in Thiruvedhikudi close to Thiruvaiyaru in the state of Tamil Nadu, particularly at a distance of nearly 5 kms away from the eastern part of Thiruvaiyaru and 3 kms away from Thirukkandiyur. The geographical coordinated of Vedapuriswarar Temple is between 10 ° 51 minutes north and 79 ° 8 minutes east. The temple has been built following the unique style of southern Indian or Dravidian architecture.
Legend of Vedapuriswarar Temple
The temple is based on the banks of Kudamurutti River in Tamil Nadu. As per ancient legendary tales, once God was appearing from the banana tank and this is the reason why is termed as `Vazhaimadu nathar`. The Shiva Lingam present in the temple is called `Vedapuriswarar`.
Sapta Sthanam
Vedapuriswarar Temple is a part of the famous `Sapta Sthanam` festival which is held at Thiruvaiyaru in April, every year. The large congregation of pilgrims enjoy the journey of the seven palanquins which are part of the seven temples at seven regions of Thiruvaiyaru consisting of Apathsahayar Temple, Puvananathar Temple, Aiyarappar Temple, Neyyadiappar Temple, Kandeeswarar Temple, Vedapuriswarar Temple and Odhanavaneswarar Temple. A flower festival is conducted which is referred to as `Poochorithal` in which flowers are offered to the deities of the palanquins, and the palanquins are moved around in a parade near the car stand.
