Apathsahayar Temple, an ancient Shaivite temple, reflects the age old Hindu culture and traditions ubiquitous in the Indian society. The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located in Thirupazhanam at a distance of 3 kms on the eastern side of Tiruvaiyaru in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The temple finds its mention in the hymns of the 7th century Tamil saint poet, Appar and has been categorised as Paadal Petra Sthalam.
Festival of Apathsahayar Temple
Apathsahayar Temple celebrates the festival of Saptha Stanam every year during the month of April, drawing hordes of pilgrims who stand as a witness to the unique festivity that adds charm and allure to the pilgrimage centre, sacrosanct in nature. Seven glass palanquins from seven different places at Tiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur congregate at this site. A grand procession of these palanquins organised close to the car stand, carrying the enshrined deities of the respective temples, are a treat to the eyes. The most captivating ritual of the festival is the Poochorithal (flower festival) where the central deities in the palanquins are proffered flowers by a doll. After the conclusion of the Poochorithal, the palanquins depart for the respective temples namely, Aiyarappar temple in Thiruvaiyaru, Apathsahayar Temple in Tirupazhanam, Odhanavaneswarar Temple located in Tiruchotruthurai, Vedapuriswarar Temple situated in Thiruvedhikudi, Kandeeswarar Temple in Thirukkandiyur, Puvananathar Temple positioned at Thirupanturuthi and Neyyadiappar Temple.
