Vayalur Murugan Temple

Vayalur Murugan Temple, dedicated Lord Muruga, is located near Tiruchirapalli (Trichy) in Tamil Nadu. The temple, constructed during the rule of the Cholas, is almost 1200 years old.

The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Muruga. The temple is more than 1200 years old and constructed during the reign of the Cholas.

Deities of Vayalur Murugan Temple
Lord Muruga, the main deity of the temple, is installed behind the Moolavar Shiva Sannithy. Besides this there are Sannithys in this temple such as Moolavar arulmigu Athi Nathar another form of Lord Shiva.

The Agni Theertham here is also known as Shakthi Theertham. As per a legend Lord Muruga had himself created this tank with the aid of his Velayudham. The Sthala Vriksham i.e. Vanni Maram seen on the left side, can be seen on entering the rajagopuram.

Vayalur Murugan Temple celebrates several festivals on a grand scale with great enthusiasm and gusto. The Thai Poosam is celebrated in the month of Jan/Feb, the Panguni Uthiram is celebrated during the month of March/April, the Vaikasi Visakam which is the birth star of Lord Murugan is celebrated in the month of May/ June, Adi Kirthikai organised in the month of July/August, Thiru Karthikai celebrated during the month of October/November and Kanda Shasti celebrated during November.

Vayalur Murugan Temple is well connected by different modes of transport. Thiruchirappali is well connected by rail to almost all major cities of India. By air, there are regular flights to Trichy from Chennai, Singapore, Malaysia, Sharjha and Columbo. Tourists can also take buses available from almost all places of Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru.
