Vaitheeswaran Temple, Tamil naduIn Vaitheeswaran temple Lord Shiva is worshipped as Vaitheeswaran or God of medicine in this temple. The worshippers believe that Lord Vaitheeswaran can cure diseases. This temple is one of the Navagraha Temples. The planet Mars is also worshipped here.

One of the Navagraha, Angaraka (Mars), was suffering from leprosy and was cured by Lord Vaidhyanatha Swamy. Thirunavukkarasar had severe stomach pain and thus his sister asked him to pray to Lord Vaidhyanatha Swamy to cure the illness. He did so and his illness was relieved. He had become a great devotee of Lord Shiva from that day.

Lord Vaitheeswaran Swamy and his Consort Thaiyalnayaki Ambal stand with the medicinal oil that would cure the diseases of the devotees. It is believed that Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Saptarishi have come here to worship the Lord. It is believed that the Hindu god Rama and his brother Lakshmana cremated the vulture king Jatayu who was killed by Ravana when he tried to prevent the abduction of Sita at this place. Jatayu kundam is a pond in this temple. There is a small shrine of Lord Dhanwantari. Lord Muruga is known as Muthukumara Swamy in this temple.

It is believed that the ashes or Thiruchandu Urundai would cure all the diseases and it is prepared from Homa Kundam. Another medicine given is Chandan with Saffron. People come here to offer Pepper and Salt with Jaggery in the Siddhamritam to get rid of diseases. People also donate carved silver plated body organs in the Hundi to cure the diseases.

Annual Brahmotsavam is celebrated during Pankuni and Thai months. Karthigai is a festival that is celebrated with great pomp. There are separate shrines for Lord Muthukumara Swamy and Sashti.
