Vaikuntha Perumal temple is another Vishnu temple of worth importance stationed in the small village of Uttiramerur. Situated very near the Sundaravarada Perumal temple is located another ancient Vishnu shrine dedicated to Vaikuntha Perumal. Here, the Lord is seen in a seated posture known as sukhasana surrounded with Goddesses Sri Devi and Bhu Devi on either side. This shrine is much smaller than the Sundaravarada Perumal temple, but this shrine is also studded with innumerable historic inscriptions of different kings of various dynasties. Thus the traditional importance of the temple is increased. The most important of these is the one belonging to the 10th century A.D. of the reign of the famous Chola emperor, Parantaka I (907-955 A.D.). This inscription, written in Tamil, provides a clear picture of the administrative system of the period. How democracy was practiced in the ancient Tamil country through a system of elections to the village assemblies is demonstrated in the historic inscriptions engraved by the contemporary kings.
This temple is small in comparison to Sundaravarada Temple. But that does not diminish the importance of the temple. Devotees visiting these two shrines will marvel not only at the numerous enchanting images of Lord Vishnu enshrined here, but also at these two outstanding architectural creations which are so unique, ancient and historic.
