Triratra Vrata is a continence that might extend from twelve days to one year. This ritual is the beginning of a rigorous training. The student while observing this custom is not supposed to eat saline food, he should sleep on the ground, he is forbidden to eat meat and sleep in the day time. According to Agni Purana the man, who practices the Triratra Vrata each fortnight, by taking a single meal on each day of its observance becomes wealthy. Triratra Vrata is observed on the day of the ninth phase of the moons increase in the Magha month.
Saraswati Puja is also known as Triratra Vrata which is observed during the last three days of Navaratri festival in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
