Sri Yoganandheeswarar Temple is located near Kumbakonam at Tiruviyalur, Tamil Nadu. It is the 43rd of the Tevara Stalams in Chola Nadu located north of the Kaveri River. The temple has a five tiered Rajagopuram and two Prakarams. The temple houses festival images of the Tirududevankudi temple nearby. Vilvam, Vanni, Punnai, Magizhamaram, Aalamaram, Nelli, Arasamaram are the trees found in this temple. About 97 inscriptions are seen in this temple dating way back to Parantaka Chola I. Rajaraja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I made several endowments to this temple. The Prime deity of this place appears as "Swayambhu Lingam" facing east. Near the southern temple wall is seen the Sun-Dial fixed some 700 years ago. This clock is constructed in such a way to measure the route of the sun from the sunrise in the morning till the sunset in the evening.
Legend of Sri Yoganandheeswarar Temple
The legend says that this sacred place has seen all the four Yugas. The deity is worshipped as Puraathaneswarar in the Krita Yuga, Vilvaaranyeswarar in the Treta Yuga, Yoganandheeswarar in the Dwaapara Yuga and Sivayoginaathar in the Kali Yuga. Brahma took a mortal form, worshipped and merged with Lord Shiva in this temple. It is believed that Agasthyar worshipped Shiva during Shivaratri.
