Tiruvedakam Temple

Tiruvedakam Temple is an ancient holy shrine nestled in the Tamil Nadu state of India. It is the fourth of the Tevara Stalams and is located in the Pandya region of Tamil Nadu. It lies on the banks of the river Vaigai. The temple has mythological and historical significance. It is closely associated with Tirugnanasambandar.

Significance of Tiruvedakam Temple
It is said that Garuda, Adiseshan and Vishnu worshiped Lord Shiva here. Sambandar`s patikam on a palm leaf is said to have gone against the current of Vaigai and settled here, as opposed to the leaf floated by the once dominant Jains here, hence the name Tiruvedakam. The Tiruppukazh has also mentioned this shrine.

Architecture of Tiruvedakam Temple
The present structure of the temple with spacious corridors and imposing gopurams occupies about 5 acres of land. Inscriptions from the period of Jatavarman Kulasekhara Pandyan (12th cent AD), and Krishna Deva Raya are seen in this temple. Images related to Sambandars episode are also seen carved on the stone steps that lead to the river Vaikai.

Festivals of Tiruvedakam Temple
Several festivals are celebrated in this temple that are participated by both local and distant people. In the month of Vaikasi, Sambandar`s miracle is celebrated in the form of the `Edu Ethireriya Utsavam`. Other festivals include Vinayaka Chaturthi, Aadi Pooram, Navaratri, Aippasi Pournami, Skanda Sashti, Kartikai Deepam, Arudra Darisanam, Tai Poosam, Maasi Magam, Panguni Uththiram and Vaikasi Visakam.
