Tirunallar is one of the seven Saptavitanka stalams of Tyagaraja connected with the Mucukunda Chola legend. The image of Tyagarajar at Tiruvarur is the foremost of the seven. Here Indra asked Muchukunda Cholan to pick the original image of Somaskandar worshipped by Mahavishnu. He picked the right one now the image at Tiruvarur, and Indra rewarded him with seven images, which were installed at seven different places and constitute the seven Vitankastalams.

The Tirunallar temple is a one of a kind. The architecture dates back to the Chola period and inscriptions date back to the 12th century.

Legends: King Nala is said to have been under the influence of Sani - Saturn for an long time and underwent many ordeals and obtained relief only after worshipping Shiva at this shrine.

Festival: Held throughout the year. Perhaps, the best-known festival here is the one marking the transition of Saturn between Zodiac signs (Sani Peyarchi). This happens once in two and a half years and hundreds of thousands visit. The entire town wears a festive look as the deity Saneeswarar is taken in a procession around town.
