Tera Fort

The Tera Fort stands today outside the village of Tera as a popular tourist attraction.

Tera Fort, Kutch District, GujaratSituated in the south western district of Kutch in the village of Tera in Gujarat, the Tera Fort is one of the many forts of Kutch. The Tera Fort dominates the plains of Kutch from its position on the banks of Tretara or the three lakes, namely, Chattasar, Sumerasar and Chatasar.

History of Tera Fort
Built by one of the Jadeja Chiefs of the Rajput clan, the Tera Fort was badly damaged during the revolt of the 1740s. It was during the reign of Maharao Lakhpatji that Sumraji Thakore of Tera, the chief of Tera Estate, spoke ill of the Rao of Kutch. Thus, a rebellion was ensued and Lakhpatji sent an army to Tera, to subdue the revolt. The war ended after 3 months of siege, when Sumraji surrendered and gave a formal apology for his remarks.

The war had already damaged the fort but the 1819 Rann of Kutch earthquake destroyed it further. However, some parts of the fort were rebuilt and currently it is a popular tourist attraction.
