Ahmedabad is the 5th largest city in India, the 7th largest city urban agglomeration in India, in the central part of the state of Gujarat, located on the banks of the River Sabarmati. The city of Ahmedabad in the northern part of the district is the administrative headquarters. It has a population of 5,816,519 of which 80.18 % were urban as of 2001. The maximum number of people speaks Gujarati, the mother tongue of the state of Gujarat, in addition to Hindi, also a popularly spoken language. Ahmedabad is surrounded by Mehsana, Sabarkantha and Gandhinagar districts in the north, Kheda district to the east, the Gulf of Cambay and Bhavnagar district to the south and Surendranagar district to the west. The district is also divided into several talukas, including Barwala, Daskroi, Dholka, Dhandhuka, Detroj, Sanand, Bavla, Ranpur, Mandal City and Viramgam.
The city is sometimes lovingly called `Karnavati`, a name for an older town that existed in the same location; in colloquial Gujarati, it is pronounced as `Amdavad`.
