The temple of Annapurna is located in Varanasi and is dedicated to goddess Annapurna. The temple of Annapurna was erected, 150 years ago, by the Raja of Poona. The temple has been magnificently decorated with artistic designs. The temple has a tower, and also a dome that has been carved and designed according to the Hindu pattern. The dome of the temple is supported by pillars. A bell can be seen hanged that is rung by devotees when they enter the temple premises. The bells here are not rung, but are beaten with the clapper or tongue attached from within. Earlier the carved portions of this temple were partially or completely painted. Many striking paintings can be seen here that adorn the beauty of the temple. The goddess of the temple, Annapurna has been installed in the garbhagriha. She is embellished with gorgeous ornaments like necklaces and ear-rings. She occasionally wears a mask of gold or burnished copper. The look of the goddess is very appealing to the eyes.
The temple is spread over a large portion of the quadrangle, and has been erected in the centre. Apart from the main temple another small shrine has been built here in one corner of this quadrangle. It is dedicated to Lord Surya, the sun God. The idol of the Lord is seated in a chariot that is drawn by seven horses. It is surrounded by a glory that indicates the rays of light which he emits from him in all the directions. In the second corner of the quadrangle another shrine has been built. The idol of Gauri Sankar has been installed in it. The third shrine located here the idol of Lord Hanuman; the monkey-god can be seen. It is made of bass relief and looks attractive. The fourth shrine here houses the idol of Lord Ganesha, with the head of an elephant and the body of a man.
The temple of Annapurna is visited by many pilgrims coming to Varanasi. Aarti is conducted in the temple premises in the morning and in the evening. The priests of the temple also receive offerings from the devotees visiting the temple. Devotees here offer rice, grain, water, flowers, milk, etc. Food is distributed to the people everyday in the afternoon hours.
