Sutamla, also known as Jayadhwaj Singha, was the 20th ruler of Ahom kingdom who ruled from 1648 to 1663 AD. During his rule, his capital Garhgaon was invaded and captured by Mir Jumla II, the Mughal viceroy of Bengal. Owing to this, Sutamla had to move back to Namrup area. This move made him popular as the Bhagania Roja. Sutamla succeeded the throne as the king after the demise of his father, king Sutingphaa.
In 1658, when the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan fell sick, Pran Narayan who was the vassal ruler of Kochbihar captured Hajo and Kamrup by throwing off the Mughal rulers. The advantage of this confusion was taken by the Ahom kings and they headed towards west and took possession of the region up to the Sankosh River. Mir Jumla II was the general of Auranzeb chased Prince Shuja up to Arakan and became the governor of Bengal. Soon in 1662 he captured Kochbihar and started campaigning against Ahom kingdom. Jogighopa fort situated along the Manas River was the made the centre of Ahoms. Mir Jumla II then invaded the regions of Guwahati, Jogighopa, Salagarh, Simlagarh and also the capital of Sutamla, Garhgaon.
In the same year, due to early monsoon Mir Jumla could not transfer the voluminous booty that he had earned with the capture of Garhgaon. The Mughals were later harassed by Atan Burhagohain, by employing guerrilla tactics. Afterwards Mir Jumla retreated to Mathurapur and Garhgaon and Ahoms once again took possession of the rest of the kingdom. Sutamla camped at Solaguri after arriving to Namrup.
