Suklenmung

Suklenmung was an Ahom ruler who ruled from 1539 to 1552 AD in the Ahom kingdom of Assam. He was also known Garhgaiya Roja as he had established the capital of the kingdom at Garhgaon. During the reign of Suklenmung, the son-in-law of Sankaradeva and Madhabdev was arrested and executed. Following this incident, Sankardeva departed from Ahom kingdom. Suklenmung was also the first king to strike coins in the Ahom kingdom. Legends of Ahom kingdom were depicted on these octagonal coins.

Suklenmung was born to Suhungmung, an Ahom king. He succeeded the throne after his father was assassinated in January 1539 by his servant Ratiman. According to some beliefs, Suklenmung himself was behind the conspiracy of assassinating his father. Suklenmung however tried to dismiss the rumours by executing the brothers of Ratiman. During the rule of his father, Suhungmung, Suklenmung had offered defence against the invasion of Turbak of Bengal in the year 1532. He however lost the battle against the invasion, suffering a severe injury for which was replaced from the commandership by the Borpatrogohain.

Suklenmung strengthened the rule of his kingdom over the regions of Kachari kingdom by marching the warrior chiefs, Baro-Bhuyan, towards Kopili river valley near the capital. Chilarai, the Koch commander, invaded the Ahom kingdom in 1546, proceeding along the secret path built by Gohain Kamal, his half brother. He moved with the purpose of establishing a camp towards the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River at Narayanpur which is the present day north Lakhimpur district. But Suklenmung successfully expelled the Koch army from the northern bank. Garhgaon tank was also excavated by Suklenmung which was constructed by Naga Ali.
