Srirangapatna Fort

Srirangapatna Fort is located in Srirangapatna, Karnataka. It was built during Vijayanagar Empire but fortified during the reign of Tipu Sultan.

Srirangapatna Fort, KarnatakaSrirangapatna Fort is located in the city of Srirangapatna in Karnataka. The fort, built in 1454 by the Timmanna Nayaka, came to prominence during the reign of Tipu Sultan. Later, the fort was renovated by French architects to prevent the attacks from invaders. The fort is protected by Cauvery River in its west and northern sides. Lal Mahal and Tipu"s Palace inside the fort complex were destroyed during the British period in 1799.

History of Srirangapatna Fort
Srirangapatna Fort was built during the Vijayanagar Empire and controlled by the empire till 1495. Later, it was invaded by different rulers- from Nawab of Arcot to Peshwas to Marathas. Lastly, the fort came under the rule of Tipu Sultan, who was invaded by the British several times. In the year 1799 the British attack the fort with forces where Tipu was killed and the fort was invaded by the British. This war was a turning point for British East India Company in the colonization strategy.

Structures of Srirangapatna Fort
The structures inside the fort are Colonel Bailey`s Dungeon, Daria Daulat Bagh, Gumbaj containing tomb of Tipu Sultan, Juma Masjid, Obelisk monuments, Sri Kanthirava statue in Narasimha Temple, Sri Ranganatha Svami Temple and Thomas Inman`s Dungeon. These monuments are maintained by the Bangalore Circle of the Archaeological Survey of India.
