The Saura sect is small as compared to Vaishnavism or Shaivism. There was a rapid decline in the 12th and 13th century of Saura. Lord Surya has been worshipped since ancient times. It has also been mentioned in the epics of Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Adi Shankracharya included Surya into the forms of Brahman. Lord Surya is treated as the Supreme. He is considered to be the giver of life and the soul of all beings. Surya is a Vedic deity. Saura is now a less practiced religion. Some of the temples dedicated to Surya are Konark in Orissa and Arasavalli in Andhra Pradesh.
Lord Surya is worshipped by every practicing Brahmin in his Sandhya vandana thrice a day. Savitri is the Sakti associated with Surya.
