The Saugor and Nerbudda Territories was a province under the rule of British Empire in India, which was located in central division of the modern day state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. The region included the current districts of Sagar (Saugor), Narsinghpur, Damoh and Jabalpur (Jubbalpore). The military headquarters and the capital of the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories were at Jabalpur. In the year 1911, it was considered to promote the region to the rank of administrative capital of British India due to the ineffectiveness of Calcutta. After the culmination of the Third Anglo Maratha War in the year 1818, the Saugor and Nerbudda (Narmada) Territories were seized and occupied from the Maratha forces. One of the Governors of the Maratha Empire was seated in the region of Saugor.
The Maratha northern region of the Saugor and Nerbudda territory was ceded by the Peshwa Maratha Empire. The southern region of the territory, which included the upper Narmada River valley and Jabalpur, was ceded by the Bhonsle Maharaja of Nagpur. The territories of Saugor and Nerbudda were attached to the North Western Provinces, which also incorporated the British dominated regions in the southern parts of present Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
In the year 1861, the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories were merged with Nagpur Province, which the British administration had annexed in 1853, in order to form the Central Provinces.
