Sankar Gompa, Leh, Jammu & KashmirSankar is a modern gompa, situated just 3km from Leh in J&K. It serves as the residence of the head priest-Kushak Bakula and is closely associated to the Spituk Monastery. Sankar Gompa is distinguished for its eye-catching construction-a right mix of old world charm and contemporary modernity.

A series of steps reaches the Du-Khang, the main prayer hall. The walls of the prayer hall are elegantly ornamented with beautiful murals. Above the main prayer hall stands Tara, the Gompa`s key deity. The deity stands as Dukkar, a 1000-armed form with equal number of heads and is also known as `Lady of the White Parasol`. The Gompa has a dazzling collection of tiny statues of pure gold and a number of moving paintings. A library is also placed within the complex of the monastery. Sankar Gompa is open for public viewing from 7.00 AM to 10.00 AM and again from 17.00 PM to 19.00 PM.
