Revi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum, KeralaRevi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum is one of the popular museums in Kerala. The museum is located on the National Highway-47 passing through the town of Alappuzha, near the powerhouse bridge. The museum is dedicated to Revi Karuna Karan who was a great philanthropist and helped in the growth and development of the coir industry.

Revi Karuna Karan
Revi Karuna Karan was born in Alleppey on November 22, 1931 in a family of tradition and culture. His grand father, Krishnan Muthalaly is credited with being the first Indian to put up a handloom factory for exporting Coir products. This industry was earlier the monopoly of European Companies. After completing his Secondary schooling from Surrey, UK, Revi did High Schooling at Lausanne, Switzerland. He did his Graduation in Business Administration from Babson.

Revi Karan devoted his time, money and energy for the growth and development of the coir industry. He dedicated his life for the modernization of the coir industry and also served as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Karan Group of Companies, the largest exporter of Coir products. He had also served as a Director of many reputed companies

Mr. Revi was also had a flair for fine arts. He was an avid collector of magnificent works of art; and eventually became a treasurer of many fabulous works of art from different parts of the world. Revi passed away on 25th November, 2003 survived by his wife Betty and daughter Lullu. After his passing away, Mr. Revi`s family established a museum in his name and displayed some of the selected items from his inspiring collections.

Revi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum houses a variety of items that attract many tourists from different places. Few of the displayed items include a range of crystal wares, especially those from the world renowned Swarovsky. The collection of different works in ivory at the Revi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum is very remarkable. The ivory and crystal collections are one of the largest of its kind. The museum also houses a rare collection of paintings. There are also many renowned Tanjore paintings in the museum. A 200 sq. ft. mural is one of the best displayed paintings in the museum. This beautiful mural was created by using only vegetable dyes, and took about 4160 man-hours for its completion. The mural depicts the social and cultural heritage of India.

The museum has an exhibition area of 10,000 sq. ft. that exhibits various objects pertaining to the cultural heritage of different parts of the world. It also has a department named `Kerala Room` dedicated for architectural marvels. Here it displays almost 3,800 pieces and many other artistic objects, especially those in porcelain, antique furniture etc. another important collection displayed by the museum is the 1946 model `Buick Super` owned by Mr. Revi Karuna Karan`s father. Such a wonderful museum is the first of its kind in Kerala.
