Princely State of Varnol Mal

The Princely State of Varnol Mal, also known as Varnoli Mal, was a one of the non salute states of India that existed during the reign of the British administration. The state was administered by the native rulers, also identified as Indian princes, under the indirect rule of the British Empire in India. The region covered a total area of 3.5 sq miles and comprised of a total population of 2,023 in the year 1941. Varnol Mal or Varnoli Mal state was located in the northern region of the Pandu Mehvassi. The former princely state was bounded by the princely state of Gothda in the north; by the princely state of Baroda in the south and the west; and by the princely state of Mevli in the east.

The princely state of Varnol Mal or Varnoli Mal was claimed by more than one native prince, who were formally addressed as shareholders. There were many estateholders, including bhagdars and talukdars, in the taluka. The shareholders of the state were Parmar Barias, who were offshoots of Sihora state. There were 2 such shareholders and 8 bhagdars in the taluka. The rule of male primogeniture, by which the first born or eldest child of the same parents had the right, by law or custom, to inherit the entire estate of one or both parents, to the exclusion of all others, was not followed in the succession of the throne or gadi of the princely state.

Before the end of the century, the shareholders of the estate mortgaged the region to a Mahrata landholder who resided in Baroda. Later the region came under the management of the Agency in the year 1937. A clerk or japtidar was appointed to administer and supervise the estate. Varnol Mal state, along with Jumkha, Nahara, Kanora and Amrapur, was one of the several subsidiaries of the princely state of Sihora. The territory was primarily a non jurisdictionary state and it paid annual tribute to the princely state of Baroda and the princely state of Junagadh. According to the Attachment Scheme of 1943, the princely state of Varnol Mal or Varnoli Mal was attached to the princely state of Baroda.

The Princely State of Varnol Mal was one of the twenty six states that formed up the Pandu Mehvassi in the former Rewa Kantha Agency. The erstwhile princely state was incorporated as a part of the Baroda Agency, which was a sub division of Western India States Agency. Later the region became a part of the state of Gujarat.

Accession of Princely State of Varnol Mal
After the departure of the British Government and the Partition of India in 1947, the former princely state was acceded to the newly independent Union of India, which also known as the Dominion of India, by the shareholders of Varnol Mal state. At present the territory is located in Gujarat state, India.
