Princely State of Mevli

Princely State of Mevli, also known as Mavali state was one of the former native states during the rule of the British Empire in India. During the early 19th century, the region was appointed as one of the princely states of India under the indirect rule of the British administration. The taluka was scattered over a total area of 5 sq miles and is a part of the Indian state of Gujarat. The region comprised of a total population of 1,918 in the year 1941. Mevli State was bounded by the princely state of Sihora in the north; by the princely state of Varnol Mal in the west and south; and by Gaikwar Savli subdivision in the east.

History of Princely State of Mevli
The princely state of Mevli was claimed by more than one native prince who were formally addressed as shareholders. There were 3 such shareholders in the region. The shareholders of the state were Pagi Kolis. The rule of male primogeniture, by which the first born or eldest child of the same parents the first born or eldest child of the same parents, to the exclusion of all others, was followed in the succession of the throne or gadi of the princely state of Mevli. Mevli or Mavali state was mainly a non jurisdictionary princely state of India. The Princely State of Mevli paid annual tribute to the princely state of Baroda. According to the Attachment Scheme of 1943, the princely state of Mevli was attached to the princely state of Baroda.

Administration of Princely State of Mevli
The erstwhile princely state of Mevli was incorporated as a part of the Baroda Agency, which was a sub division of the Western India States Agency. Later the region was merged with the state of Gujarat. The state of Mevli or Mavali was one of the 26 states which formed up the Pandu Mehvassi, which was under the administrative control of the erstwhile Rewa Kantha Agency.

Accession of Princely State of Mevli
The last native ruler of the princely state of Mevli acceded the territory to the newly independent Union of India after the political withdrawal of the British Government of India from the country on 15th August 1947. After the country was divided between India and Pakistan, the native rulers of the states were given the choice of acceding to either the Union of India or the Dominion of Pakistan. The native shareholders of Mevli state decided to merge with the Republic of India. At present, the region is incorporated as a part of the Indian state in Gujarat state.
