Perunna Subrahmanya Swami Temple

Perunna Subrahmanya Swami temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan, is located in Changanacherry in the Indian state of Kerala. According to the instructions of the Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma of Travancore kingdom, the temple was for the first time opened to all the Hindus irrespective of caste. Even Gandhiji during his first trip to Kerala visited the temple and offered worship to the Lord. During his visit an imposing ceremony and a grand meeting was held at the eastern gate of the pilgrimage centre.

The ancient Perunna Subrahmanya Swami temple whispering the religious sagacity and the spiritual beliefs of the people of the yesteryears, houses the furious form of Murugan in its sanctum sanctorum or garbhagriha. The lord in the temple is worshipped in the form of Devasenapathi regarded as the absolute general of the holy forces. The deity, seen facing the eastern side, is depicted in a raged and infuriated mood as he had annihilated Tharakasuran, a demon. Besides this Mahaganapathi, Ayyappan, Sarppa Deva, Rakshas Ayyappa Mahaganapathi, Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna are the other deities installed in the temple.

Perunna Subrahmanya Swami temple has been inscribed with inscriptions in Vatteshuthu alphabet on the western side of the temple. These are thought to have been inscribed during the rule of Kulasekhara Koyiladhikari in the 10th century. Pilgrims from different destinations visit the temple especially on Tuesdays, considered to be auspicious. Brahmin priests are appointed for the daily worship of the temple. The temple authorities celebrate festivals during the months of December and January.
