Nivati Fort is a fort located near Nivati Beach in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. This fort is located on the hill near the Nivati village. The fort is spread over an area of 4-5 acres and is covered with dense bushes. The fort was constructed by Shivaji to protect his empire from the neighbouring rulers. Nivati Fort was ruled by various emperors.
History of Nivati Fort
Shivaji Maharaj built this fort immediately after the Sindhudurg Fort was built. Nivati Fort was used to safeguard the sea route from Karli creek to the Vengurla port. This fort was later seized by the rulers of Sawantwadi. In 1748, Ismail Khan, who was working under the Portuguese, captured this fort. In 1787, Karvirkar of Kolhapur gained control of this fort. In 1803, the control of the fort again passed to the Sawants. The British captured the fort on 4th February 1818.
Structure of Nivati Fort
Nivati Fort stands at a height of 300 ft. The gates and bastion of Nivati Fort are in good state. The entire fort is protected by 20 feet wide and 10 feet deep moat. Most of the fort"s parts are in ruins.

The nearest town is Malvan from where direct buses are available to the Nivati Fort. This fort is close to Nivati and Parule villages. The route towards the fort is good and two wheelers as well as four wheelers can be driven directly in the fort. The nearest airport is Dabolim Airport, Goa and the nearest railway station is Kudal. One can hire taxis from the airport and railway station to reach the fort.
