Maharloka is the seventh Heaven of the celestial spirits as per Hindu mythology. This is the sphere of saints located at the distance of ten million leagues above Dhruva. The inhabitants who are distinguished for their piousness are taken to Maharloka along with the Pitris, the Manus, the seven Rishis and the Gods.
Etymology of Maharloka
The term Maharloka derives from the Sanskrit word "mahas", which means "power," "enormity," "wonder" and "strength." Loka means "world," "kingdom" or "plane of life." Hence the term Maharloka means the loka of strength, power and wonder.
Myths of Maharloka
As per Hindu mythology, there are seven higher worlds and seven lower ones. The higher worlds are the Seven Spheres "vyahrtis" or "lokas", namely "bhuvar", "deva", "mahar", "jana", "Indra", "rudra" and "marut" and the lower ones (the "seven underworlds" or paatala lokas) are "atala", "vitala", "sutala", "rasaataala", "talatala", "mahaatala", "paatala".
Maharloka is said to be the residence of the saints, sages, enlighten beings and rishis. Maharloka is also called the "Muni-loka" which is the fourth highest planet of the universe. The rishis of Maharloka can move between lokas in the universe at an amazing speed. They are always involved in the dedication of God. Their life duration is a day of Lord Brahma. When the "mahapralaya" or destruction comes they either walk out from the universe and enter Vaikhunta to live there forever or die in "mahapralaya". Below the Maharloka, there is Swarga loka and around 20,000 yojans (Vedic measurement of distance of ancient India) above it is Jana loka.
