The antique temple of Sri Ramanuja is associated with the legendary story of the ancient times. Hence the legendary greatness is the added grandeur to the antiquity of the temple. It is well known that Sri Ramanuja`s teacher, Yadavaprakasa, because of differences with the former, planned to murder him while on a pilgrimage to the Ganga. Coming to know of this plot, Ramanuja somehow managed to escape and entered a dense forest. Exhausted during his journey through the forest, Ramanuja rested under a tree and in due course he fell unconscious. After he awoke, he found a kindly hunter and his wife near him. They came to know from Ramanuja that he wanted to go to Kanchipuram; since they were going to Rameshwaram for a pilgrimage, they promised that they would guide Ramanuja to Kanchipuram. Later the hunter couple took him to a convenient place to rest and they too stayed there that night. They also promised to take him to a nearby well the next morning to drink water. Early in the morning, as promised, they commenced their journey and took him to a well, down which Ramanuja climbed and drank its sweet water. He carried some water for the hunter and his wife, but with utter astonishment, Ramanuja found the hunter couple disappeared. It was at that time he realized that the couple was none other than Lord Narayana and Goddess Lakshmi, and on enquiring where he was; found to his surprise that he was in Kanchi. Thus the legendary story of Lord Narayana and goddess Lakshmi associated with the Sri Ramanuja Temple has endowed it with a stately grandeur.
