Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple is located just 3 km from heart of Mangalore city of Karnataka. The beautiful temple at Kudroli is dedicated to Lord Gokarnanatheshwara, an incarnation of Lord Shiva.
It is believed that the green pasture near the Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple is used to graze land for the horses during the rule of Tipu Sultan of Mysore. Hence, the name `Kudre` (horse) `Bali` which was transformed into Kudroli over time.
Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Kshetra was started in 1912 by his religiousness Narayana Guru, a social reformer and a saint. The original temple structure was constructed in the Kerala style of architecture. The temple was renovated in 1991 and now it is in the Chola style.
In the 18th Century, the entry into the Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple was banned for backward classes and the downtrodden. So the leaders and the senior citizens of Billava community longing for equality on matters like these gathered themselves and sought solace from the spiritual head of their community "Brahmashree Narayana Guru", who had achieved an incredible in religious revolution in Kerala during those times of divine movement. He built 101 temples all over Kerala and provided direct entry into the temple to each and everyone. The senior leaders of the community under the leadership of Sri Sahukar Koragappa went to plead with Guruji to extend the movement and his deeds to Mangalore as well. Shri Narayana Guruji consecrated the Shivalingam that he had brought to Kudroli temple at Mangalore and named it as "Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara" in the year 1912.
The main deity of the Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple is Lord Sri and other idols of the Kshetra are Lord Ganesha, Lord Subramanya, Goddess Annapoorneshwari, Lord Bhairava, the Nava Grahas and Lord Shaneshwara.Navarathri Utsav at Kudroli is celebrated in great devotion in the premises of Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple. The Navarathri Utsav celebrated here is popularly called as Mangalore Dasara. A grand procession of Goddess Durga takes place during Navaratri, which attracts many devotees from different parts of Karnataka. The idols of Lordess Sharada and Maha Ganesha, life-size idols of Nava Durgas are installed in the temple premises in an attractive way during Navaratri.
The other festivals celebrated at Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple are Maha Shivaratri, Sri Janmashtami, Ganesha Chaturthi, Nagpanchami, Diwali, and Sri Narayana Jayanthi. The temple is managed by the Billava Community. Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple combines the modern architecture with traditional science of sculpturing on the themes of Prateeka Sampradaya of Adhwaithamritha. The temple has entry porches of the elephant - Gajaraja and has an expanse of 2 Lakh sq. ft. complete with marble flooring.
Lakhs of pilgrims belonging to different castes, communities & religions come and offer prayers here. There are instances of many people who have been cured from different ailments by the grace of Lord Gokarnanatheshwara.
