The festival is celebrated by the local communities of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karanataka like the ezhava, billava and idiga. The Festivals of Tamil Nadu is the reflection of the rich Tamil culture and ethnicity. Sri Narayana Jayanthi is also known as Chathayam Dinam in Kerala. The festival marks the birthday of Narayana Guru, the greatest social reformer of India. It is celebrated in all over world by the above communities.

Sri Narayana Jayanthi is celebrated on the Chathayam asterism of the Malayalam month of Chingam. Sri Narayana had emphasised upon `one caste, one religion and one god.` He had done this at a time when the society had been fragmented on the basis of casteism and economic inequality. Sri Narayana had acknowledged the Vedic religion and its fundamental principles. He however, stood against caste-based ascendancy, sectarianism and caste discrimination. Sri Narayana Jayanthi is celebrated on a grand scale that marks conferences, floral tributes, communal harmony processions, community prayers, providing food to the poor people as well as for community.
