Kanjanoor Temple

This temple is located at Kanjanoor near Kumbhakonam. The deity woeshipped here is Shiva.

Kanjanoor TempleKanjanoor Temple is associated with Sukran - the plant Venus and is - regarded one of the nine temples in the Thanjavur linked to the Navagrahams. This shrine is also called Palaasavanam, Bhrammapuri and Agnistalam. Kanjanur is considered as the 36th in the series of the Tevara Stalams located in Chola Nadu north of the river Kaveri.

Legends: Brahma was blessed with a vision of Shiva`s marriage with Parvati here. Agni worshipped Shiva here and hence the name Agneeswarar.

Temple: This temple has two prakarams and a five-tiered Rajagopuram at the entrance. Images depict legends related to Haradatta Sivacharyar. There are shrines also dedicated to Maanakkanjaarar Nayanmaar and Kalikkaamar here.

Stone images of Nataraja and Sivakami in the Nataraja Sabha and is called the Mukti Mandapam. The Shivatandavam is called Mukti Tandavam. Legend states that Shiva blessed Paraasaramuni with a vision of the cosmic dance here. Inscriptions from the Chola and Vijayanagar periods can be seen in this temple.

Festivals: A festival commemorating Haradatta Sivacharyar is celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai each year. Mahasivaratri, Arudra Darisanam, Navaratri and Aadi Pooram are also celebrated here.
