The Indian 6th Infantry Division was a part of the British Indian Army that was raised in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh on 1 March 1941. It was established for service during the Second World War. The British Indian infantry division was stationed in Iraq in September 1941. Later the troops were posted in Iran. It functioned as a part of the Tenth Army from the year 1942 to 1943. The Indian 6th Infantry Division served mostly in the Middle East. It was later dissolved on 15 October 1944. Some of the most reputed commanding officers of the division during World War II included Major General A. W. W. Holworthy, Major General J. N. Thomson and Major General B. H. Chappel.
The Indian 6th Infantry Division was reformed after the Indian independence and the partition of India. It was raised as the 6th Mountain Division in the year 1963. Initially the division headquarters was located in Nainital, Uttarakhand. Presently, it is headquartered in Bareilly district in Uttar Pradesh. The division is a part of the I Corps of the Indian Army.
