Wallajah Mosque of Chennai
This mosque is situated on the Triplicane High Road in Chepauk. It was popularly known as the Big Mosque and was built in 1789. It has spacious open space and is the biggest in the city. During various occasions, all the Muslims in the city gather here. It is an imposing and historic mosque, which is associated with Nawab Wallajah`s family.
Thousand Lights Mosque of Chennai
This is a historic mosque standing on Thousand Lights area at the junction of Peters Road and Anna Salai. The area surrounding the mosque has several lanes and narrow streets, which is associated with members of the Nawab family as the street names reveal.
The name of this church is derived from the lighting of a triangular lodge of a building constructed by Nabab Umdat-ul-umrah around 1800 for Shias assembling during Moharram. This is one of the major mosques of the city.
Kasi Viranna Mosque of Chennai
In Moore`s Street in George Town, this church can be seen. Kasi Viranna was a chief merchant, who was very close to the Golconda Sultan. He even had a Muslim name Hassan Khan. He is said to have built the mosque in 1680 before his death.
