Goa Fort

Located in the Ratnagiri district of the state of Maharashtra about 15 km from the town of Dapoli is the Goa Fort. This sea fort was one of the three forts that was build to guard the Suvarnadurg Fort; the other two forts are Kanakdurga and Fattedurg. The Goa Fort is one of the prime tourist attractions in the village of Harne.

Overview of Goa Fort
The exact year of construction of the Goa Fort is not recorded but it has been suggested that the fort was under the reign of the Maratha Empire from the period of 1670 to 1818. In the year 1862, there were 19 cannons and 200 soldiers on the fort. The Goa Fort later came under the administration of the British Empire in 1818 and remained under them until the Indian Independence. Currently in ruins, the fort is under the control of the Government of India.

Architecture Design of Goa Fort
The Goa Fort is made out of laterite stone and has two entrance gates, one facing the landward side and the other facing the sea. The walls of the fort have various sculptures and there are remains of the collector"s rest house on the fort.

Visiting Information on Goa Fort
By roadways, the nearest town of Dapoli is the closest at a distance of about 15 km and is a mere walking distance from the Harne town to the Goa Fort. The nearest city is Mumbai with the major railway station and airport located at a distance of almost 240 km and 234 km respectively from Dapoli.
