Gajendra Varadha Temple

Gajendra Varadha Perumal Temple, housing the idol of Lord Vishnu, is located in Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the 108 temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Gajendra Varadha Temple, Tamil NaduGajendra Varadha Perumal Temple, an ancient Hindu temple, is situated in Kabisthalam at a distance of 15 kms from Kumbakonam in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Vishnu. The temple is located on the Kumbakonam-Tiruvaiyaru road. The pilgrimage centre, depicting the religious outlook and sentiments of the people of the yesterdays, is regarded as one of the `Divya Desams.` It is one of the 108 temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu worshipped by the 12 poet saints.

Gajendra Varadha Perumal Temple, gracing the enchanting town of Kumbakonam, is adorned by a 5 tier rajagopuram. The temple spread over a vast area houses the idol of Gajendra Varadhar as its prime deity. Gajendra Varadha Perumal Temple is one of the Panchakanna (Krishnaranya) Kshetrams. The word Kannan denotes Lord Krishna and panch means five. The Panchakanna or the five sacred temples are located in Tamil Nadu. An interesting feature of all these temples is the fact that none of them houses the idol of Lord Krishna. Besides Gajendra Varadha Temple, the other temples constituting the Panchakanna are, Loganatha Perumal Temple located in Thirukkannagudi, Neelamegha Perumal Temple in Thirukannapuram, Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple situated in Thirukannamangai and Ulagalantha Perumal Temple in Thirukkovilur.
