Districts of Himachal Pradesh are brings forth the true essence of the state. There are 12 administrative districts of Himachal Pradesh. Deputy Commissioner or the District Magistrate is responsible for the overall functioning of the administration of a district. He has several responsibilities and is aided by several additional officers.
A Deputy Commissioner is the executive head and is thus responsible for the maintenance of law and order in a particular district. He also acts as the Chief Revenue Officer and is responsible for collection of revenues. Moreover, police administration of a particular district of Himachal Pradesh is headed by the Superintendent of Police (SP).
For a proper functioning of the administration of the district, each district is divided into sub-divisions, which are further divided into development blocks and tehsils. Brief information about the 12 administrative districts of Himachal Pradesh is mentioned below -
Bilsapur District: Bilaspur District of Himachal Pradesh has its headquarters located at Bilaspur town. This district is popular for the artificial reservoirs Gobind Sagar on Sutlej River. Bilaspur district has three tehsils namely Ghumarwin, Jhandutta and Bilaspur Sadar.
Chamba District: Chamba District is one of the 12 administrative districts of Himachal Pradeshwith its headquarters at Chmaba town. This district is located in the north-western region of the state. Chamba District is considered as a mountainous district of Himachal Pradesh.
Hamirpur District: Hamirpur District, an administrative district of Himachal Pradesh, is known for its high literacy rate. Hamirpur town is the district headquarters. Hamirpur District was formed in the year 1972 by carving out of Kangra District.
Kangra District: Kangra District is one of the 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh with Dharamsala as its administrative headquarters. Kangra District has been administratively divided into eight sub-divisions.
Kinnaur District: Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh has its headquarters at Reckong Peo. This district is popularly called as the land of Gods. This administrative district is situated in the south-eastern part of the state.
Kullu District: Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh has its headquarters at Kullu town. The very popular Kullu Valley is located at this district. Kullu District has another popular valley that is known as the Lug Valley.
Lahaul and Spiti District: Lahaul - Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh consists of two former separate districts of Lahaul and Spiti. Keylong is its administrative headquarters. It is the largest district of the state and was formed in the year 1960.
Mandi District: Mandi District is the centrally located district of Himachal Pradesh. Mandi is the district headquarters. Mandi District was created after the two princely states Mandi and Suket were merged.
Shimla District: Shimla District is one of 12 administrative districts of Himachal Pradesh. This district derives its name from the name of its headquarters town Shimla. This district came into being after the re-organisation of the state.
Sirmaur District: Sirmaur District lies in the south-eastern region of Himachal Pradesh. Nahan town is the district headquarters. Sirmaur District is basically a rural and mountainous district of the state.
Solan District: Solan District is an administrative district of Himachal Pradesh and Solan town is the district headquarters. This district was formed in 1972 after the reorganization of the state.
Una District: Una District of Himachal Pradesh is considered as one of the main industrial hubs. This district mainly includes plain lands dotted with small hills. Una District is located in the south-western part of the state.
