During the rule of British Government in India, Chandrasekhar Azad Park was named as Alfred Park, which is informally called Company Garden. Chandrasekhar Azad Park was built in the year 1870 to mark Prince Alfred`s visit to the city, with an area of 133 acres, it is the biggest park in Allahabad.

Naming of Chandrasekhar Azad Park
Chandrasekhar Azad Park was renamed after freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad, who sacrificed his life here, during the Indian independence struggle in the year 1931. Chandrasekhar Azad was an Indian revolutionary who reorganised the Hindustan Republican Association under the new name of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) after the death of its founder, Ram Prasad Bismil, and three other prominent party leaders, Roshan Singh, Rajendra Nath Lahiri and Ashfaqulla Khan. He is considered to be the mentor of Bhagat Singh and chief strategist of the HSRA. Chandrasekhar Azad died at Alfred Park in Allahabad on 27 February 1931. The British Police surrounded him in the park citing information from an informer. He was wounded in the process of defending himself and Sukhdev Raj and killed three policemen and wounded some others. His actions made it possible for Sukhdev Raj to escape. After a long shootout, holding true to his pledge to never be captured alive, he shot himself dead with his last bullet. In Independent India, Alfred Park is known as Chandrasekhar Azad Park.

In 1870 old cantonments were transformed into a park when, after the Rebellion of 1857, new areas were developed. At that time, it was known as the Garden for the Whites. Chandrasekhar Azad Park is the biggest park in Allahabad. It attracts a large amount of people. Chandrasekhar Azad Park opens from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
