Bombay Light Horse

The Bombay Light Horse was one of the prominent cavalry units of the British Indian Army. The regiment was raised in the year 1885 as a division of the British Indian Cavalry Reserve. The Light Horse regiment of Bombay (now Mumbai) was close to the military strength of a battalion and included around four hundred military personnel.

The troops of the Bombay Light Horse generally fought more as mounted infantry than usual cavalry units. The troops of mounted infantry rode horses rather than of marching and fought on foot.

After the country attained freedom from the rule of the British Empire in India, the nation was separated into 2 political and geographical parts. As a result the Union of India and the Dominion of Pakistan was formed through the Partition of India. Several regiments of the British Indian Army are shared amongst the modern armies of India and Pakistan and some regiments were disbanded. The Bombay Light Horse unit was dissolved in the year 1947.
