Bhubaneswari Temple at Udaipur in Tripura is one of the oldest temples in the state. Presently the temple is lies adjacent to the palace ruins. Bengal`s most famous luminary, the Poet Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in his famous drama Bisharjan and his novel Rajarshi, immortalized the temple. The site is a great attraction for tourists from Bangladesh and West Bengal.
It is dedicated to the Mother Goddess Bhubaneswari who is considered one of the most powerful divinities in the cosmos. As per legends she is known to create everything and at the same time destroy everything that is evil.
The Bhubaneswari Temple was built between 1667 - 1676 A.D. under the patronage of Maharaja Govinda Manikya. The temple is constructed on a 3 feet high paved terrace. The four chala roofs, stupas adorning the entrance gates and core chambers are typical features of this temple. The stupas in the garbhagriha are further styles with floral motifs.
