History of Bhatner Fort
Built in 253 CE by Bhupat, son of king Bhati of Jaisalmer, the Bhatner Fort is situated on the banks of the Ghaggar River. After getting defeated by the Sultan of Ghazni, King Bhupat took refuge in the jungle around the Ghaggar River, where he constructed a safe haven for himself, which later came to be known as the Bhatner Fort.

Covering an area of 52 bighas, the entire Bhatner Fort is built of bricks and is in the shape of a parallelogram, with a dozen bastions on each side. In the middle of the 13th century, Sher Shah Suri repaired the forts of Bhatinda and Bhatner but in 1391, the latter was conquered by Timur. Over the centuries, the fort has passed through several hands before finally coming under the British rule and remained under them until the Indian Independence.
