The shrine was constructed in reverence to a Muslim saint and scholar, Ala-Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan. He was a 19th Century Ahle Sunnat, who is known for his staunch opposition of Wahabis in India.

The Bareilly Sharif Dargah is also known as "Dargah-e-Ala Hazrat". The dome of the Dargah was designed by Shah Mehmood Jaan Qadri with the use of matchsticks.
