Badhagachhi

Badhagachhi is a town situated in the Hooghly district in the state of West Bengal in India.

The town of Badhagachhi is in the Hooghly district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is under the jurisdiction of Balagarh police station in Chinsurah subdivision. There are four sub- divisions of this district, namely Chinsura Sadar, Chandannagar, Serampore and Arambag. Its headquarters are at Chinsura. The district of Hooghly acquired its name from a town by the same name on the west bank of Hooghly River situated 40 km north of Kolkata. This town was used as a river port in the fifteenth century. At the time when Sultan Mahmud Shah gave the permit to Portuguese traders to trade in this region the Hooghly River was the chief way for transport. The earliest European to arrive at this part was the Portuguese sailor Vasco-da-gama. Hooghly served as the first European settlement in Bengal. The district of Hooghly is one of the major economically prosperous districts in West Bengal. It is well known for jute cultivation, jute industry and jute trade hub. There are also several engineering farms. One of the largest car factories in India, the `Hindustan Motors` plant is located in Hindmotor. The jute mills are to be found adjacent to the banks of the river Hooghly in Tribeni, Bhadreswar, Champdani and Sreerampur.

The Badhagachhi town of this district has a population of 4718, in accordance with the 2001 census. Males and females respectively make up 51% and 49% of the total population. Badhagachhi has a mean literacy rate of 70%, which is quite higher than the national average of 59.5%. 54% of the males and 46% of the females are literate. 11% of the population comprises children below six years of age.
