Bengali newspapers started emerging during India`s struggle for Independence and in the post independence period, due to the rich tradition of literary works in Bengal. Bengalis are known to have a literary bend of mind, and therefore, various notable persons launched a number of the newspapers. Some of the Bengali newspapers are described below.
Anandabazar Patrika
Anandabazar Patrika is published from Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai and Silchar by the ABP Group. It started on 13th of March, 1922. A notable freedom fighter namely, Prafulla Chandra Sarkar is credited with the foundation of this newspaper. In 1922, the newspaper was first published as a 4-page evening daily. In 2001, the internet edition of the newspaper was launched. Anandabazar Patrika is known to be the largest circulated Bengali daily in India.
Bartaman
Bartaman is a leading Bengali newspaper published from Kolkata, Siliguri, Burdwan, Malda and Midnapore. The newspaper was started on 7th of December, 1984 by Barun Sengupta, who is recognized as a former Anandabazar Patrika journalist. Bartaman also has an online version.
Aajkal
Aajkal is a Bengali daily published from Kolkata and Siliguri. Its Tripura edition is published from Agartala. The newspaper was launched in 1981. A person named Abhik Kumar Ghosh is credited with the foundation of this newspaper. It is among the few Indian dailies which do not publish astrological predictions. Its evening edition is called Sandhya Aajkaal.
Sangabad Pratidin
Sangabad Pratidin is a Bengali daily published from Kolkata. Its publication was started on 9th of August, 1992 by Swapan Sadhan Bose. The newspaper is known for a cartoon strip namely, Amal Aloy, created by cartoonist, Amal Chakrabarti. The strip is being published in the newspaper for over a decade. Sangabad Pratidin is known to be the first Bengali newspaper to start an online edition.
Uttar Banga Sambad
Uttar Banga Sambad is a Bengali language broadsheet published from Siliguri, Cooch Behar, Malda and Alipurduar. It commenced on 19th of May, 1980 in a small letter press in Siliguri. It is known to be the largest circulating daily in North Bengal.

Ganashakti, a Bengali daily is an official representative of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of the West Bengal State Committee in print media. It first appeared in the year 1967. The newspaper is published from Kolkata. Ei Samay Sangbadpatra is a Bengali-language broadsheet daily newspaper, which was founded on 15th of October, 2012.
