One of the most important forts in Palghar district in the state of Maharashtra, the Asheri Fort stands at an elevation of 1,680 ft atop the hills near Mendhavan Khind on Mumbai- Ahmedabad highway. Located on the foothills is the Khodkona village, the local villagers partake in the restoration of the Asheri Fort.
History of Asheri Fort
Almost over 800 years old, the Asheri Fort was built by Bhojraja of the Shilhara dynasty. The fort was later captured by Bimb Raja of Mahim from Kolis and eventually came under the reign of the Gujarat Sultanate. Over the centuries, the Asheri Fort changed hands several times and came under the Portuguese rule when Asherigad was annexed in 1556.
The Asheri Fort became the northern boundary of the Portuguese territory and was made the capital of 38 villages and 6 parishes. The fort had 20 water cisterns and 2 ponds. By the year 1737, the Asheri Fort was captured by the Maratha forces led by the Chimaji Appa and finally in 1818, the fort came under the control of the British Empire. Currently, the Asheri Fort is under the administration of the Government of India.
